Live Mesh Mobile Now Open To All

Monday, 15 December 2008 21:25 by Nick MacKechnie

The Live Mesh team recently announced that Live Mesh for Mobile is now available for all countries, so everyone can try it out. Since the mobile service initially launched back on October 30th, the team has updated Live Mesh for Mobile to address many of the reported issues that users had submitted. With those issues out of the way, the mobile version was then ready for wider testing. Although anyone can try Live Mesh for Mobile now, it is worth noting that it works better on 3G networks.

If you want to try it out, you had better hurry: there are only a limited number of spots available. To sign up, go here  and add your Windows Mobile device to your Mesh. (That link will provide you a Live ID for adding a WM phone to the Mesh.) If you were already running the Live Mesh for Mobile client on your device, you should see an update notification the next time you log in.

emoze Adds Facebook Messaging to Windows Mobile Phones

Friday, 5 December 2008 22:43 by Nick MacKechnie

emoze_logoDo you wish you could receive your Facebook messages along with your regular email on your Windows Mobile phone? Now you can with the new version of the emoze mobile push email service. With emoze’s free application, you can read, reply, and send messages directly from your phone’s interface without having to open up and browse to the Facebook web site itself. It’s completely integrated with your phone, all that’s required is a data connection.

Once installed, the emoze Mobile Client application communicates with the Emoze Global Service Network (EGSN) to receive the incoming emails and direct them to the inbox on the mobile device.

Emoze can be downloaded from www.emoze.com or downloaded directly onto your Window’s Mobile device by navigating to http://emoze.com.

Encarta on MSN Mobile!

Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:31 by Nick MacKechnie

MSN Mobile 2.0 has launched and with it, an Encarta channel!  If you have a smart phone, you can check it out by going to MSN.com and in the channel menu, select “All”, then “Encarta”.  You can see the Quote of the Day, peruse three editorially-programmed articles of the day, take a quiz, guess the Mystery Picture of the day, and do an Encarta article search.

Have a look and spread the word!  If you don’t have a smart phone, you can view it here.

Windows Live Messenger Translation Bot Released

Wednesday, 10 September 2008 00:31 by Nick MacKechnie

Hi All,

Do you chat globally? If so, you’ll be glad to hear that the Microsoft Translator team has just released a new translation bot for Windows Live Messenger.  With this new bot, you can IM back and forth with friends who speak different languages while the bot does the translations for you. To use the new bot, just add mbot@hotmail.com to your contact list. Keep in mind that machine translation isn’t perfect – using slang or other colloquialisms can give it/you trouble.

At the moment, the translation bot support the following languages:

  • English to/from:
    • Arabic
    • Chinese Simplified
    • Chinese Traditional
    • Dutch
    • French
    • German
    • Italian
    • Japanese
    • Korean
    • Portuguese
    • Russian (RUS->ENU only)
    • Spanish
  • Chinese Simplified <-> Chinese Traditional

More languages will be added over the next few months.
The team also suggests that the bot can be used in WLM on your smartphone for quick translations when you’re travelling in foreign countries. Not a bad idea, considering nearly all smartphones today can support Windows Live Messenger (if your phone doesn’t have WLM already installed, you can download it from here or you can get all the mobile tools from here).

iPhone pricing, iPhone pricing, iPhone pricing..

Wednesday, 9 July 2008 04:31 by Nick MacKechnie

Influential US blog Techcrunch is calling New Zealand "Land of LotR and high-priced data plans" after today's iPhone pricing announcements from Vodafone.

Oh my god! Are they insane? The Vodafone New Zealand site is choking right nowback up, and this appears to be the most god-awful money-grabbing exercise opportunity to manage supply and demand through fair pricing…  It' certainly highlights the value of Windows Mobile and storing applications on the device rather than in the cloud…IMHO..

Local users appear to be similarly discontented and the NZ Geekzone forums are rife!

Mobile Devices, The Internet, Developers!

Thursday, 12 June 2008 04:40 by Nick MacKechnie

Hi All,

I had a few discussions yesterday with a colleague of mine who is based in Auckland, and we came to the conclusion that with the uptake in mobile devices that have browser functionality, the likes of Windows Mobile, IPhone etc, this opens up a real opportunity for developers and businesses to look differently at how they do business. In the example of an IPhone, you pretty much need to be connected over the wire all the time if you want to utilise the applications in the cloud, Windows Mobile is a little different from the perspective that applications are predominately stored locally on the device. As technology advances, people are becoming less patient in terms of wanting to wait – therefore if you have a device that is ‘cool’, that is always connected, and you can achieve what you need to when you want to do it, why wouldn’t you – Enter developers – I would expect to see an upward trend for companies needing and wanting to develop websites for hand held devices to cater for this demand. The world for businesses and consumers has dramatically changed over the years by consumer driven demand. The challenge at the moment in New Zealand is the cost of data over cellular networks – Given the limited competition in the market; I’m not sure how quickly this will change.
