Microsoft Videos Launched

Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:55 by Nick MacKechnie

Hi All,

Earlier this year at the MIX08 Conference, Microsoft announced an upcoming video portal designed to make finding Microsoft videos even easier. Earlier this month, that portal launched, so if you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you can do so here: preview.microsoft.com/video.

The site features official Microsoft videos, including those you’ve seen here on Channel 10, as well as sister sites 8 and 9, but that’s only a small sampling of the content. The site also features product videos for Windows, Office, server products, mobile products, web products, hardware, tools, Xbox, and more as well as how-tos, showcases, ads, security videos, events, research projects, and other solutions. You can browse any of these particular areas from this page or you can browse by intended audience – IT Pros, Developers, Home Users, etc.

After finding a video to watch, only one click and you can email it, Digg it, or grab embed code so you can post the video on your own web site or blog as you wish. However, LiveSide points out one of the most useful features for the new video portal – RSS feeds for searches. They give the example of a feed for Windows Live.

Work/Life Balance..

Wednesday, 18 June 2008 00:49 by Nick MacKechnie

Hi All,

I thought I’d share a bit of a perspective on working for a company I enjoy working for, in a city I enjoy living in. I’m working for a large US multinational, we make some cool stuff, have the ability to solve business problems through smart adoption and deployment of technology, we innovate and invest heavily in R&D and I’m living in Christchurch, New Zealand – sound terrible so far?

We lived in Auckland for 9 years and our intention was always to come back and settle with family and friends, the challenge we had was that I love working for Microsoft and I wasn’t ready to close that book. Microsoft as an employer invests heavily in training, soft skills, has a great culture and provides a wealth of opportunities to employees in New Zealand as well as around the globe. So I wanted the best of all worlds – and I managed to get it.

If I look back at the decision making process of moving back down to Christchurch, and some of the conversations I had with my management, One of the questions that stands out for me, was “How effective do you think you can be down South?” – My response is simple – Microsoft is a technology company, we have designed, built, tested and released a wealth of solutions that enable people to work from pretty much anywhere in the world. I’m not a person who gives up easily, and distance will be no barrier to me being able to do my job based in Christchurch, as well as contributing to the New Zealand business and beyond.

So rather than preaching, I thought I’d flip it around and ask some questions -

Where else can you work for a company that:

· Has a strong focus on helping the greater good of people through giving programmes for Health and Education as well as enabling staff to do payed volunteer work

· Wants to retain great staff and enables them to live and work from most locations around the world

· Make it right – If we do fall over our feet, will stand up, we are accountable and ensure the customer is looked after appropriately

· Has changed the way we live our lives though self belief, hard work, great people, technology, and research and development

· Drives employee behaviour heavily by customer satisfaction – the reality is that happy customers buy more

· Has a very long term view of research and development – Out of failures comes an opportunity to learn and grow and ability to re-use learnings

· If at first we don’t succeed, we try, try again

· Has produced some kick-arse software and hardware

· Has a flat management structure and promotes the ability to escalate and communicate when appropriate

· Has nice finishing touches to make your working week easier – fresh fruit to all floors, an acceptance that we all work hard, and therefore also need to play hard, recognises that people may have different work styles and measures on output rather than legacy work patterns

Why am I bleating on about this? Since moving back down in Christchurch, I’ve come across a lot of old friends, who are happy-ish with their job, and see this as it. I find myself very fortunate to be paid to do my hobby, work for an organisation that I enjoy working for, and living in a great city that offers what we are looking for as a family, and to be apart of something bigger than Christchurch and New Zealand. Moral of the Story – If you are going to spend a large amount of you’re life doing something, why the hell not do something you enjoy doing!

New Zealand 38th for broadband?

Tuesday, 17 June 2008 01:46 by Nick MacKechnie

A fresh perspective has been added to the OECD broadband rankings commonly used to benchmark New Zealand’s network capabilities — and that perspective isn’t flattering.

Akamai ranks New Zealand a low 44th in the world for the percentage of high broadband connections, the percentage of connections of 5Mbit/s or greater speed. When simple broadband of 2Mbit/s is included in the total, New Zealand climbs to 38th.

HowGood - The new Business networking site...

Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:57 by Nick MacKechnie

An entrepreneur (John Wall) is targeting his new website to impact Kiwi business networking as Facebook has with social networking. The site has been designed around a customer rating system for service providers in high-risk, low-trust industries, such as real estate or financial planning, where monetary stakes are high. It will be interesting to see if it suffers the same fate as OldFriends and FindaKiwi with competing sites such as Facebook and Linkedin pulling the rug out, however the focus is currently slightly different.

Hi All,

Loopt - The mobile social network that helps you connect with friends in the real world by dropping pins on a map to show your friends’ locations. What’s interesting about all this is that they chose Microsoft Virtual Earth to be the mapping service for Loopt.

YBox2 Kit - DIY Set-top box

Friday, 13 June 2008 22:42 by Nick MacKechnie

The YBox2 is a DIY networked set-top box. Connect it to your TV and you can design customized content to be delivered direct from the Internet.

This project is great for people who want a new platform to experiment with. The video and Internet cores are ready to go and easy to work with. We have some example widgets that demonstrate the YBox2's capability, and the whole project is open source so you can start hacking your own. If you've ever been curious about the Parallax Propeller chip, the YBox2 is a perky little platform with tons of accessories.

The YBox was first invented by Uncommon Projects, as part of Yahoo Hack day. Robert Quattlebaum is the main designer behind the YBox2.

  • Built using the new Parallax Propeller chip - 8 cores, 32KB of RAM running at 80MHz!
  • Works with any NTSC or PAL TV that has composite (RCA) input
  • Works with any network router that supports DHCP, just plug in an Ethernet cable and you're ready to go
  • Kit comes with an Internet-enabled bootloader, so you can upload new programs directly from your computer, without a special cable or prop-plug (Propeller chip programmer)
  • IR receiver for using a TV remote control
  • Full color status LED
  • Piezo Buzzer for generating beeps, alarms, and tones
  • Pushbutton for input
  • Lots of examples programs to try out
  • Fits in an altoids tin!

Microsoft Surface at the Rio in Las Vegas

Thursday, 12 June 2008 22:24 by Nick MacKechnie

Harrah’s Entertainment and Microsoft are unveiling a new interactive entertainment experience with the deployment of six Microsoft Surface units at the iBar in Las Vegas’ Rio Hotel and Casino.
Guests in the iBar will be able to play games, order customized drinks for themselves (or that special someone across the room) and send photos and messages to each other via strategically placed video cameras that can be controlled by the Surface units.

Sky TV's push into high definition

Thursday, 12 June 2008 10:03 by Nick MacKechnie

Sky TV, today announced it was spending $22 million over two years on high definition broadcasts.

It’s aiming to get 80,000 set top boxes installed. The new high definition set top boxes would cost $599 or could be rented for $15 a month.

Given it's high definition, it will be interesting to see if this means SKY will dedicate appropriate bandwidth to it - the reason I say that is if you are watching a great game of rugby for example on a nice big plasma, often the quality of the picture can be reduced due to supply and demand of the signal (bandwidth)... Time will tell..
